Ethics undoubtedly play an important role in every walk of life. They are set for the benefit of everyone. Therefore, even the hospitality industry has a proper rulebook of set ethical standards that they should abide by. These standards are useful not only for the staff they hire but for the customers that stay in their hotels as well as the environment too! following are some basic values that managers tend to violate.
Damaging The Local Community & Land
Many hotels are located at exotic places where they cause damage to the native culture and environment, therefore such rules are required to keep the sanctity of the native culture intact. When these rules are violated, many hotels do get away by paying a hefty fine, however, they end up losing alot of customers due to the mishap.
In 1999, the United Nations World Tourism Organization devised a global ethics code for the hospitality industry which helps to minimize any negative effect on the present local community. This helps the hotels from various lawsuits too! Hotels greatly affect their surroundings. The hotels which are located near beaches endanger the lives of the animals above and below the sea. It is their duty to keep the beach clean and avoid dumping any form of wastage into the water. However, many hotels keep violating this code. which sadly affects the marine life and the hotels get fined or they even end up going bankrupt and shutting their business.
Hiring Illegal Immigrants
Apart from the above-mentioned problems another ethical issue that the hospitality industry faces is related to the hiring of illegal immigrants and paying low wages. There are many hotels who hire illegal immigrants and pay them lower wages because these individuals do not want to get caught and need a job, therefore, they comply to lower pay for their work. To avoid such violations, the UN keeps a close check on hotels which they find flagging certain standards. If the investigations reveal that the hotel in question has hired illegal immigrant or is paying low wages o the employees, they have a lawsuit knock at their doors!
Low Regard For Customer Satisfaction
When it comes to standards that hotels have to maintain for their customers, there is a whole checklist for managers to follow. One of the most notable violation is done by managers of the hotels. They use cheaper products in the hotels while charging the customers twice for them! Whether it is the buffet you eat or the mini bottles of shampoo and conditioners waiting for you, is pretty cheap many times. Many times they were even said to harm the client. This is why they UNWTO has special teams who pay unannounced visits to keep things in check.
Every time we step out for any holiday, one of the most important things we value is a clean environment. Sadly, many hotels lack the ability to manage a standard clean hotel. There are times when they end up with multiple fines due to lack of proper cleanliness in their kitchens. This mainly happens when chefs and waiters often avoid wearing the proper gear.
Furthermore, another important thing to notice here is the off-record keeping. Many managers tend to charge twice as much for a standard room and keep those records in a separate book. This activity is used for money laundering and it is extremely illegal. You should always check the price by visiting different sources. Also, hotels have to keep the client’s information confidential. There have been many credit card frauds and identity thefts. These were initially caused by information leaked through hotels and restaurants.
With everything said, everyone loves a vacation for which the accommodation is extremely important. You don’t want to ruin a breathtaking trip to the Maldives by staying at a cheap hotel which has no regard for keeping the beautiful native lands clean and in their original form. Or, who have poor facilities for their customers and you end up getting sick? Therefore, you should always be pretty cautious while choosing the place you will stay during your visit.
